Banksy v Robbo??

Banksy has recently landed himself in a world of bother though whether he's actually bothered we guess only close peeps would know. Its been said that Banksy was slapped some time ago by old skool writer Robbo so decided some time later to extract revenge by going over one of Robbo's historic (painted 25 years ago) Camden Town pieces. Banksy's artistic career stretches back to the 1980's so its clear he has a firm grasp on graffiti history. Others are saying its been tagged for decades now so who cares whilst old skool writers are up in arms. A quick Google search and you'll find writers up and done the country announcing they will destroy Banksy work on sight.

Mural artist stabbed while working on piece

SAN FRANCISCO — A San Francisco artist who was chosen by city officials to paint a mural on Market Street was stabbed last weekend, and his paint was stolen while working on the piece.

Glen Park resident Jason Hailey, known among artists as “Chor Boogie,” has been painting a 100-foot-long mural in the 1000 block of Market Street as part of a series of city projects intended to beautify the seedy strip and attract more pedestrians and bicyclists.

But on Saturday, the aerosol artist became a victim of that effort.

While working on the colorful mural around 7:15 p.m., Hailey was attacked by three male assailants after a female swiped one of his spray cans, according to reports from the artist, his agent and those corroborated by the Police Department.

The artist was jumped after trying to retrieve the spray can, police said. The assailants reportedly fled on a Muni bus and remain at large.

Hailey suffered two stab wounds not considered life-threatening and was released from San Francisco General Hospital on Sunday, police said.

The stabbing occurred about two weeks after Mayor Gavin Newsom held a media event on mid-Market Street to tout recent improvements in the area, including a largely expanded police presence.

During the event, Newsom said the area was being patrolled by 32 beat officers, 16 per shift, which is double the number prior to the changes. At one point, the mayor helped paint a portion of Hailey’s mural after the artist handed him a spray can.

In a statement, Luis Cancel of the Arts Commission said he was “shocked” about the stabbing.

“With the exception of this recent event, none of the installations in the Tenderloin and Market Street project areas have been vandalized, which is a testament to their positive impact,” Cancel said.

The stabbing, however, will not deter Hailey from finishing his mural.

In recounting the incident on Facebook, the artist wrote that the struggle could have happened “anywhere to anyone.”

“Crisis precipitates change,” Hailey wrote, adding that he “looks forward to helping beautify the community.”

The Soup Gallery is extremely excited to welcome an artist who rides high in the estimation of his peers, a style captain who has been rocking on top with his groundbreaking approach to graffiti for over 15 years.

ErmOne is well versed in applying his unique style to any given platform whether it be canvas, concrete, metal or paper. Never failing to drop a mad fresh flavour that leaves fellow graffiti writers awestruck and eye candy enthusiasts hungry for more.

'Style Never Dies: The Scandalous Adventures of ErmOne' is an exploration of the classical graffiti elements – letters, arrows, connections, drips, splats and clouds.

The funk master will be flexin' his unique style with an exhibition of framed original paintings and photographs, with a price range to suit all pockets.

There will be an opening party for the exhibition on the evening of Friday 6th November @ The Soup Gallery 106 Kenwyn Street, Truro from 5 p.m - 9 p.m.

ERMONE Biography-

“I started writing graffiti in the very early 90s aged 12, doing a Daze piece outlined in duplicolor brown and filled with olive green, after meeting and hanging out with some older writers. Inspiration came from the local scene, which was strong but fading out, and from Sheffield which was really bombed at the time.

I’m into graff for the experience of painting, I just love the way it looks, everything about it. Graffiti works best when it’s illegal but I’ll paint legal walls too sometimes. I’m not into generic graffiti, or being in one place stylistically, for too long. I try to be experimental and work loosely, not taking too long over getting lines right or having a few drips here and there. Recently I’ve stopped sketching, instead drawing big tags when I want to do a piece, and building them up until the vibe's right. I want my pieces to live and move a bit, and to have that mysterious fresh factor.

I’m like painting new and interesting spots, exploring around. I’ve traveled around the world painting in many countries. I’ve met some amazing, talented people on the way, who’ve kept me safe from harm, fed me, dropped knowledge and been super cool. I’m based in Paris right now, and there’s an amazing graff scene here… so much inspiration that it’s impossible not to want to paint.

I’m also trying to create work on canvas - graffiti inspired but more than just a piece on canvas. I’m interested in using the classical graffiti elements – letters, arrows, connections, drips, splats and clouds, the little things that bring drama to a piece.

In the future I’d like to continue traveling to see and paint more of the world.

Influences: Old school new york graffiti, old school London Graffiti, the fine art world, my crew and everyone I’ve painted with, google image search, graphic design.

Graffiti Removal - Hackney Wick

Hackney Wick is the home and canvas to many of London's street / graffiti artists for a few years now. Cursing down the canal yesterday i came across the blank walls and obvious attempts to totally wipe the other wall. There seems to be an unwritten rule down there as the work stays on walls for months so unlike Sclater Street where the corporation claimed graffiti artists were fighting amongst themselves this corporation makes no such claims. Now we're wondering if that white paint is graffiti proof because it just looks like a massive blank canvas to us. In the true spirit of the Olympic we can hear starters orders, Ready, set, GO!!!

Around 1999 after reading No Logo by Naomi Klein, in particular the bit about Ron English changing billboards with paint alterations, it occurred to me that I could do something similar. I cut the letters "Su" from one billboard and placed them over another. The ad that had read "Suddenly everything clicks" had been subverted to say "Suddenly everything Sucks".
